Children are always amoungst the first casualties of war. Many are orphaned at a very young age are left with a devastating lack of access to food, medical assistance, and education. In some cases, children are forced to work as soldiers, and in other cases, they're recruited and used as sexual servants. This type of psychological trauma can scar a child for life.

War Child Canada aims to provide children with the assistance needed to cope with the immediate and long-term consequences of war. All of our programs and decision-making processes are designed to find grassroots solutions to help children on a local level. We believe that our influence, even on one child, can make a positive and lasting impact on their country and community.

Our vision, like that of our sister offices in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, is to advance the cause of peace through investing hope in the lives of children caught up in the horrors of war.

War Child Canada's international work is supported by the active involvement of thousands of ordinary Canadians. It is our firm belief that all of us have the potential to make change happen, both in our own lives and in the lives of children affected by war. Canadians, in particular, have a long and proud history of taking the lead in actively addressing global issues.

War Child Canada has been able to successfully harness this energy in our national programs. In particular, we have connected with young Canadians across the country to inspire them to work towards a future where every child’s rights are respected.

Sierra Leone - War-Affected Youth Rehabilitation Project

Following Sierra Leone's independence from Britain in 1961, the country descended into 35 years of internal conflict, which decimated key social and economic infrastructure. Intermittent bouts of civil war have been characterized by widespread use of child soldiers, kidnapping of girls and women for use as sex slaves, rape, torture, and massive human displacement. Ghana - The Trauma Recovery and Cultural Awareness Project

Civil war erupted in Liberia in 1989, and violent conflict persisted for over 14 years. One result was a major refugee crisis: an estimated 231,000 people fled, and sought refuge in neighbouring Ghana, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Guinea. Despite efforts by the UNHCR, there remain approximately 42,000 refugees in Ghana living in poor conditions in the Buduburam camp. Read More...

Georgia - No War Zone Georgia Project

The current political conflict in Georgia dates back to 1991, when Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union. The conflict began with social unrest and attempts by local authorities in the Abkhazia region to separate from the Republic. The unrest came to a head in the summer of 1992 when the Government of Georgia deployed troops to the region, resulting in 200 casualties. Read More...

It's been over five years since coalition forces launched a full-scale military assault on Afghanistan, following the tragedy of 9/11. As is so often the case with modern conflict, the lives of many civilians were destroyed. Iraq - The Iraq Rehabilitation Project

When the US tanks rolled into Baghdad in 2003, things were supposed to begin improving for the citizens of Iraq. One year after Saddam Hussein took control of the country in 1979, he led Iraq into a bloody war with neighbouring Iran. By 1989, almost a million people were killed or wounded - and the bloodshed has continued to this day. Two Gulf Wars and 10 years of stringent sanctions have left the country crippled. Read More...

Ethiopia - HIV/AIDS Orphans Development Project

It's estimated that there are 14 million children under the age of 15 orphaned by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa alone. This number is higher than the total of every boy and girl under the age of 18 in Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Ireland combined. The number of children is expected to climb to over 18 million by the year 2010. Read More...

Sudan - Youth Capacity Building Project

Sudan has endured conflict and insecurity since independence was proclaimed on the January 1st, 1956. The conflict is deeply entrenched, pitting Arab Muslims in the North against Christians and black African animists in the South. Long-simmering differences in language, religion, ethnicity, and political power erupted in a civil war between government forces and rebels, with a large role played by the NIF and the SPLA. Much of the war in northern Uganda has been fought by children. Between 20,000 and 44,000 children have been abducted by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army and forced to fight. Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka Rehabilitation Project

2004 was a significant year for Sri Lanka for two reasons. First, citizens experienced the fragile end of a 20-year civil war that effectively uprooted Sri Lankan structures and society. Uganda - Girl's Education Initiative Project

War Child Canada, in partnership with the local Acholi Education Initiative, has developed a community-based strategy in order to increase access to basic education in the Acholi region of northern Uganda.
